As I was skimming through my email today, it dawned on me how much the animal rights zealots have utilized the divide & conquer tactic in their activities. That combined with excellent propaganda has really hurt all facets of the animal ownership community. They are using us against ourselves. To quote Pogo, "We have met the enemy and they is us."

The fanatics, which includes among others: PeTA, HSUS, and the ASPCA, have divided all pet owners along the lines of rescue vs purchase; desexed vs intact; no use vs use; guardians vs owners; and much, much more. It's my opinion that this divisiveness needs to cease. ALL animal owners need to unite against the fanatics who are out to destroy the human - animal bond.

Some comments that I recently read with this divisiveness in mind follow. The comments were made by different people and were specifically with regard to a family who purchased a puppy in Colorado that had been recently imported from TX. The puppy died only four (4) days later.

What occurred is between the rescue and the buyer. It is a civil matter. It is no one else's business. It never use to be a matter of public interest until the AR's came in to destroy us all.
You also have to look at the "intent". Was this malicious, negligence or not the rescue's fault? That all has to be clarified between the rescue and buyer - and the rescue and the shelter in Texas.

I can see where the rescue thought since having a health certificate, all was OK. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. This time, it wasn't. I don't think it was so much intentional as it was of not being familiar with incubated conditions and not having a lot of experience.

You're, or course, entitled to your opinion, however, with your getting so upset --- you're doing exactly what the AR's want you to do. Divide and conquer ... are you going to give them the satisfaction?

Why do you want to hurt these other animal enterprises? It's the AR's (animal rights zealots) that are the problem and they should be eliminated. You should fight to eliminate the AR's and the unreasonable regulations that are put up against us. Again - another example of divide and conquer and you fell for it.

You bet your heinny that the breeder would be plastered all over the Internet and receiving obscene emails with death threats. Would you want that to be done to you? Then why wish it on someone else --- like that rescue?

You're lumping all rescues into the same group and that's not fair. All rescues are not AR-minded rescues. So you want to punish them all. And none, IMO should be punished.

The way I see it, there are many types of animal enterprises and that's good, because people should be able to make a choice. Not everyone wants a dog from a breeder. People should be able to buy at pet shops or rescues or anywhere that one is available. As animal providers, we are all good - we all serve a purpose to allow people to make a choice. We have to stop attacking one another and concentrate on eliminating the trouble maker ... the AR's.

People like Frank Losey have worked very hard with long hours and no compensation for time or expenses to accomplish that against HSUS. And there's Center for Consumer Freedom. And individuals like Betsy (whinwoof) that have busted their chops trying to work around the legislation in their states.

I guess all I'm saying is that the AR's have done awful things and have us conditioned to lash out. We can't let them take our pride and decency away from us.

I've not really been writing anything since then, as Ms. Beretta is keeping me hopping! I did lose 20 lbs and I swear it's because I'm constantly on the move after her.

Beretta - 6 months of age

As of today, it looks like Beretta's first dog show, our little debutante's coming out party, will be here in Albuquerque on Mother's Day weekend. The judges that weekend should be good with puppies: Russ McFadden, Barbara Rupert, Molly Martin, and Howard Yost. Not sure how many days I'm going to enter the little twerp. Much depends upon how she continues to mature and how strong she is by then. Right now, I'd probably enter her all 4 days. LOL... She is a pistol!

As much as I love all my dogs, Beretta is probably the finest one that I have bred, at least with regards to conformation. Running a close 2nd is her Uncle Banner. Glory, her dam, most definitely produced better than herself. It is right & proper to mention the other half of Beretta's genetics, her sire: Lux, Fr & US Ch Denetorn des Legendes du Moyen Age.

Much has been made by some about this breeding because I used a foreign import and some have said using him is a departure from what I would usually use. I contend they are incorrect and have assumed that he is different than what I'd use. My breeding method is pretty much phenotype to phenotype. I pay attention to pedigree, but that is not the overall driving force. I pay more attention to the physical attributes of the dogs and whether those attributes are complimentary to each other.

Aged 4 months

What really drew me to using Denetorn was not only his physical attributes (great shoulders, great return of upper arm, etc) but also that his pedigree ties in with Glory's several generations back. This is, in reality, a loose line breeding on Ch Shalfleet Sea Dancer, Ch Aroi Talk of the Blues, and Ch Ekohils Wizard of Oz. Yes, they are back further in the pedigree, but I'm a believer in Enrico Tesio's methods of a balanced pedigree and in emphasizing dam lines over sire lines. In thoroughbreds, it's called the X-Factor. For more on the X-Factor in greyhounds, please check out this article: The X-Factor in Greyhounds.

Other reasons for using Denetorn included, in no particular order, his availability to be bred to Glory, a bitch without a "fashionable" pedigree in show circles. Many, many stud owners were contacted prior to Rachel Martin (Denetorn's owner) and I reaching an agreement. Most rejected my advances on no basis other than her pedigree, which is 1/2 racing blood. She was rejected sight unseen, for the most part and some of those rejections were just downright nasty. One such example from a noted breeder who was most admired at one time,
I find that very sad as Beretta is based upon her lines and her old dogs, excepting the racing blood. We are proud of her racing heritage. She comes from some of the finest lines in the racing world, combining the blood of the Hall of Fame stayer, Dutch Bahama; the great staying bitch Malka; the incredible sprinter & Hall of Famer, Downing; the outstanding producer Buzz Off, and many others. There is a long history behind her of outstanding stayers, long distance runners, starting with her granddam, Abbey Lou.

Of the great Malka, Dennis McKeon related this story of Downing's 1978 American Derby win. The story is reprinted here with permission from the Grey2K Lies blog.
Tonight, our campaign broke the $9,000 mark! There are ebbs and flows to this campaign, and I still believe that it has yet to go viral in a way I think is entirely possible. The message of the video is solid, and the more people who see it, the more buzz there is about what National Purebred Dog Day is doing, and what it can accomplish.

Imagine one of those inane (and often inaccurate) lists we find on Yahoo or the Huffington Post claiming to know the "Top Ten Most (fill in the blank) Breeds" being replaced by the results of a survey of 35,000 purebred dog owners who know what they're talking about? Those 35,000 people are the fans of the NPDD page!

This is what a grassroots movement looks like, friends, and you've helped advance it. Each one of you. And what does it look like when those efforts get noticed? Like this:

National Purebred Dog Day's campaign was named Number One in KickSpy's Top 100 Campaigns in Journalism as of tonight. Let's keep it going!

In checking the progress of the campaign the other day, I became concerned when the progress graph flat lined. The fundraising effort was stagnant. It didn't go anywhere for 24 hours. You know, I really dislike seeing flat lines in graphs.

My guess for the flat line is that people are afraid to support a movement for purebred dogs, for the breeders of purebred dogs. The rich and famous will always be able to get whatever kind of dog they want. Who will suffer? Guess. We & the dogs do. This is time to call in favors, reach out to the people we know with a bully pulpit, anyone with a blog, massive Twitter audience, or even write to a celeb.

And finally, I've been asked what happens not only if the goal isn't met, but if it is. Since I won't entertain negative thoughts about the campaign right now, I'll answer the last question. If the goal is met before the deadline, I hope people keep donating! Why? Two reasons: First, because, as my mom always used to say, things always cost more than you think they will. If I missed something in calculating expenses, it'd be nice to have that cushion. Second, if, and it's a big if, some of the donations have been made by people unsympathetic to our cause who intend to pull them at the 11th hour thereby dooming us to fail, a cushion would protect against that.

Till the next update, keep up the good fight, keep sharing the Kickstarter link and the video, talk about it with your friends, and love your purebred dogs.

Glory and her single puppy

For instance, if the puppy sneezes, which they sometimes do, my thought... OMG, she's got pneumonia! Or, she sure seems to be sleeping a lot. Wonder if she's 'lethargic' and sick? Or if she's not moving around a lot, "Is she breathing?"

Yesterday, she slept a lot. Since Glory has been taking such good care of her, I've not seen a single stool or pee spot. So, the brain went into overdrive and the thought was, "I wonder if she's constipated?"
Mind you, no one that I know has ever heard of a constipated, 2 wk old puppy but with my luck (Murphy was an optimist when he wrote Murphy's Law)... So, after a long, long conversation with Bonnie in OK, my mind was set at ease.

Went back into the house, picked up the puppy, and sat down to enjoy some puppy in the lap time. Uh oh... here comes Grammy Abbey Lou. With Glory on one of the beds and the puppy in my lap, Abbey decided that the baby needed to be polished. Abbey started buffing & polishing & stimulating the puppy, so much so that the baby deposited a 2" long puppy turd right in the middle of my shirt and then she peed.

Well, I now know that she is defecating & urinating. Those bodily functions are working.

One worry down.
I'm a member of the Pet-Law email list. I get many depressing e-mails by way of this list, emails that point out how much the animal rights activists are fighting anyone and everyone who makes a living working with animals; anyone & everyone who raises animals; and anyone & everyone who owns animals. Normally, I don't pass on ag related emails but this one is important as it shows how the animal rights zealots, such as Humane Society of the US (HSUS), Animal Protection New Mexico (APNM), and Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM USA), among others, impact our lives with their duplicity and lies. How they use their minions in the mainstream media to distort & promote their agenda, which is to promote animals above all others, regardless of cost, and to destroy animal ownership. These people lie when they say they are "for the animals". After all, don't forget it was Wayne Pacelle who said with regard to domestic animals, "One generation and out..."

Yesterday, the Boton Red Sox won Game 6 of the World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals to win it for the for the third time in the past decade. This coming just one year after finishing in last place and two years after a historic collapse in September. Way to go guys... You're proven the value of teamwork.

Well done. Congratulations!
I so wanted to breed her but Chance stepped in and changed our plans.

For one, she acquired fly parasites, which according to our vet, were probably due to the conditions at our neighbor's place, i.e., too many donkeys on too small acreage; manure; etc. There's no denying that manure & livestock draw in flies, especially if the manure isn't picked up religiously. I know I'm out there on a daily basis picking up our dogs' waste to keep the flies at a minimum. Those fly parasites live under the skin and they are gross & disgusting and she was put on a 2 wk course of cephalexan to prevent secondary infections from the parasites.

For another, the dog we were going to use came up with poor semen and it was doubtful that she could be impregnated. Sigh....

Ya know, everything happens for a reason and it is always for the best, even if it is disappointing & hard to believe. So, the search for a new beau for Glory has started. She's next in season in either February or March 2014.

On the positive side, Glory finished her Grand Championship under Mexican judge, Ricardo Forastieri Gonzalez at the Valencia Valley Kennel Club shows held in Los Lunas, NM on Saturday, Oct 12. There was a good, overall entry of 6 greyhounds. We are absolutely delighted! Pictures were taken and they'll be posted when I get them.

Not to be outdone by his littermate, on Thursday, Nampa, took a 5 point major towards his Grand Championship, beating a champion of record, and a couple of points on Friday, when he finished as Select dog.

Ellie went Winners Bitch on three days, picking up another three points. She needs majors and it looks like we're going to have to travel to get them. Not looking forward to that.

Overall, it was a very good weekend.

More later....
Life is taking me on a roller coaster, right now, and half the time I don't know if I'm coming or going or coming or going.... Reminds me of a song, The Windmills of Your Mind, which is the theme from the Thomas Crowne Affair (1968).

Round like a circle in a spiral like a wheel within a wheel,
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning, running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of it's face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind.

My mind is just going around & around & around.... You see, I've had little in the way of response with regard to people wanting Glory puppies. I don't understand why, unless it is the economy. She's a beautiful dog with a beautiful temperament as are all her siblings & her parents. Go figure... People would rather spend $1000+ on a "Labradoodle".... a mutt.... than a well bred greyhound. I just don't get it.

Glory On Her Retirement Sofa

Anyway, we've been working on finishing Glory's Grand Championship and she's almost there. She only needs ONE MORE POINT!

She's been out 6 times as a champion, in fact, I took her off her retirement sofa after 2 years to exhibit her one day, and one day only, to Dr. Edna K. Martin (Midge Martin). That was in May 2012. Since then, she's only been out at 6 local shows held in Albuquerque & Los Lunas. In that very limited showing, she's taken 6 majors under 6 different judges: Midge Martin, James Fredricksen, Sari Brewster-Tietjen, Houston Clark, Anthony DiNardo, and Russ McFadden.

Thank you!

So, right now, it's one day I want Glory puppies and the next day, I don't. You may be wondering why? It's not because of her, it's because I'm getting older. I'm 58 & hubby is going to be 62. Greyhounds average a 12 year lifespan, so I'm asking myself, do I really want a dog (any dog), when I'm 65 years old and hubby is 69? More & more, I'm thinking.... no.

So... the windmills of my mind are going & going & going....
However, it won't happen unless I have some solid buyers (more than 1) lined up.

Glory Gaiting at Fun Match

Glory is not your typical AKC greyhound. She's moderate in angulation, very balanced, and she has a strong topline. She's not a small girl, as she's tall & leggy and weighs in at around 70 pounds.

We hope to breed her to a dog owned & bred by Carol Curlee - Ch Chaparral Tour de France aka Lance. The breeding is based upon the dog's pedigree, carrying several crosses of the much admired dog, Ch Solstrand Fine N' Dandy. The hope is that this will give her pups a better shoulder than she has, as her shoulder is a bit straight and it limits her reach while running which makes her a bit slower than her brothers.

Why were we looking for lines back to Ch Solstrand Fine N' Dandy? Well, back in 2000, I approached his breeder, Dagmar Kenis-Pordham, about breeding Glory's granddam, Feather, to him as Feather's damline was directly related to his damline. Feather's great-granddam (4th dam) was a littermate to his maternal granddam. It was lovely on paper.

(Feather's test mating to Frankie - http://greyhound-data.com/dbtestmating.php?&sireid=329719&damid=322839)

Sadly, I was informed that she did not believe in breeding by way of artificial insemination and there was no way that Feather would be shipped to England to sit in quarantine for 6 months to allow her to be bred. So...
Now it's Glory's turn to be bred and I still want to collect (for want of a better term) that Frankie blood. Lance has it... Carol is agreeable to the breeding. However, I really don't want to be raising 7 puppies here after one or two go to their homes. I'm not set up for it and it also goes against local animal control ordinances.
Here's the proposed pedigree....
Glory is next expected to cycle in either August or September. So, if you're looking for a well bred greyhound puppy....
Primer By Harry Jennings

A lot of people have been talking about their dog's ears of late, and I decided to do a little research and get the full story behind the stand-up "prick" ear that is seen in an increasingly large number of NGA dogs.

Prick ears are nothing new, occasionally medieval manuscripts will talk of dogs with prick ears (q.v. Le Levrier niais, Bib. Natl. MS 12203a). However, it was with Downing in 1977 that the track world became aware of the efficacy of the prick ear.

When coming into the first turn, the dogs must jockey for position, and decrease speed dramatically, so as not to go sailing off into the paddock area. Keith Dillon felt that what was needed was an air-brake system, similar to what was being employed on the Air Force's new F-15. Downing was the first and finest product of Dillon's directed breeding.

Downing was able to sustain higher speeds further into the first turn, thus being able to pass the other dogs as they slowed. At the critical point, Downing huge ears would pop straight up off his head, providing critical air resistance and slowing his speed dramatically, allowing him to make the turn. Eyewitnesses at the Hollywoodian in 1977 reported the "ka-WHUMP" of Downing's ears coming up was audible over the entire track. Invariably he lead races coming out of the second turn, and dominated down the backstretch.

Tragically, it was an ear accident that cut Downing's career short. During a training race, Downing entered the first turn, but only his left ear deployed, the right ear, ironically, in a perfect rosette. The unstable aerodynamics of his half-deployed braking system pulled his head first down, then up over his left shoulder. Downing courageously avoided the traffic of the other dogs and attempted an emergency stop. Unfortunately, it was too late and Downing smashed through the outside rail, spun across an open area, and came to rest in a sno-cone concession.

Downing did survive the accident, which Richard Petty compared to his dramatic turn two disaster at Darlington in 1967, however his hock was shattered and he could never race again. Keith Dillon, undaunted, pressed onward with his breeding program, producing Perceive, Nicky Finn, Keefer, Understood, and a host of others with the revolutionary air-brake system. Mr. Dillon was sued by McDonnell Douglas (designers and manufacturers of the F-15) for copyright infringement in 1980. The case is now in its 11th set of appeals, and is expected to reach the Supreme Court by about 2007*. In other legal battles, the owner of the sno-cone concession was awarded $.75 in compensatory damages, and $11.7 million for pain and suffering.
*NOTE: The case still has not been heard or settled and the expected Supreme Court date has been moved to 2017.

Using the most advanced breakthroughs in genetic engineering, the discarded design, and aged superstructure of a test vehicle codename "Lindsey Party", Dyno-Mutt Systems, Inc. research teams have been at work. Background investigations show that this vehicle is a direct modification (mod. 4) of the land speed record holding "Downing" design. Having no desire to experience the tragic structural failure and "crash and burn" (see Ear Aerodynamics, above) due to improper air scoop deployment, we have made the following changes.

The "Lindsey Party" is lower to the ground (being in New Mexico may have influenced this) and the air scoops are reduced in size to 5/8 scale. We use and call this RAM AIR INDUCTION. This is how it works:

The central processing unit (CPU) is suspended in a bath of shock absorbing and electrically conductive saline solution. This has reduced the "rattled brain" syndrome by 50%.

The now smaller "air scoops" trap air and divert it down and around the CPU. It is intercooled and an exchange of electrons is passed to the CPU boosting RAM capabilities.

The heavier, cooled air (mass now 1/3 greater) is passed around the dual optical sensor array and is diverted to the "nose cone" of the Lindsey. This is where dual, water cooled (we think) passageways are located. These passageways are twin venturies and boost the air flow to SCRAMJET velocities.

This now supersonic airstream can be controlled by the RAM expanded CPU to fire continuous thrusts or bursts (see snort, sneeze, sigh) of retro-rocket blasts of compressed air allowing subtle but effective braking control going into high speed turns.

Safety note: during an actual live firing test of this model in Arizona, the Lindsey experienced an o-ring failure. This caused the CPU housing to veer from side to side (left to right) more than 10 degrees off the plane of horizontal travel. This caused a main structural failure of the port side, aft, propulsion device (see strut, actuator, "dog leg"). Our bio-engineers provided a titanium pin once reputed to be from a Warsaw Pact, "Red October", something or other. After implementation of the pin into the aft, propulsion device, speed trials were set. Following completion of an extensive (and exhaustive) twelve weeks of "gotta walk before you can run" testing, Bionics department said A-OK.
The 5/8 scale RAM AIR induction used in conjunction with the retro-rocket blasts has proven to be practical and very safe. After a field test in March, it was reported that John Glenn was present and said, "I wish we had that system back in '63!"
Actual performance testing was held recently in a remote area (56?) In New Mexico and military installations of southern Colorado. It was there that the Lindsey upheld the field of honor (mom's apple pie, yadda, yadda, yadda) and we found that the system works. One point yet to be solved by our team is that every time we are ready to leave the test sites, we are told to get "BOB". After five recurring "Get the BOB" we really think we should look into this. He's a great owner and I'm so very happy that he has one of my greyhounds.

Chispa has her own sofa to lie on and she acts like a princess, unless squirrels are involved. Carlos takes Chispa to the park for exercise and, what usually happens, is a squirrel comes along. I don't know what it is about those long tailed critters, but greyhounds go wild when they see them. Carlos lets her chase the squirrels and he tells me that she really wants those bushy tailed critters. It reminds me of her Grammy Feather, who would go out of her way to try and get a squirrel.

Feather, when she was at Kathy's waiting to be bred, was tormented by a squirrel which would come down to the lowest branch of the maple tree and torment the hounds. One day, Feather had had enough. She watched the squirrel, positioned herself under the branch, sat and balanced herself on her haunches and then launched herself straight up! She looked like a Patriot missile going after a SCUD! Much to her disgust, she missed. However, the squirrel, which by now had scurried to a higher branch, never came down after that.
Here is what Carlos said about her in a recent e-mail, "Chispa's priority is to play and run. We go running every morning. I go in rollerblades and she goes very fast. She is very dominant but also very affectionate and tender. Her body is very muscular, but very light. She looks like a ballet dancer. Chispa is the most expressive dog ever. With her eyes, she talks. Her coat is soft and exceptionally shiny."

"Every time you send me pictures of her brothers and sister, I think I'm going to the ring. I'm sure that she is going to win, because she is very, very pretty and her temper makes her a winner, nothing scares her. I'm sure she is the kind, who in the ring, is going to grow. I can tell when people look at her, she plays, "Paris Hilton." She knows. She also knows that she is strong, beautiful, fast and, with her eyes, she gets what she wants. One of these days, you get the surprise of her in the ring."
Jetty was a Feather son. As white as his mother was, Jetty was that black. Like his mother, he was gorgeous and graceful. Sadly, his testicles did not descend. At 3 months of age, it was time to find Jetty a loving pet home, an appropriate home for a greyhound puppy.

Due to the wonders of the internet, a home was found for Jet in Michigan. The people had great references and sounded perfect, so arrangements were made for Jetty to go & live with them.

I should have known better... The relationship between us started off with a disagreement over castrating the boy prior to his going there. Greyhound puppies as a large breed should not be castrated before their growth plates close, which is usually around 13-14 months of age. This is something in which I firmly believe as early castration leads to excessive bone growth and it has been linked to some other health issues such as incontinence. But, the home sounded so good for the boy... I went against my gut and judgment and had the boy castrated prior to his trip to Michigan.

Gizmo the Cat & Jet

Please note that castration for a bilateral cryptorchid is not an easy surgery. The vet has to go in through the abdominal cavity to find the hidden testicles and, in Jet's case, they were way up by the bladder. Anyway, we had him castrated and about a week later, he developed a urinary tract infection (UTI). He was put on antibiotics and arrangements were made to transport him to Michigan.

Laurel Drew & I transported the boy part of the way to his new home in Michigan. We had him in a crate with a pad. He was such a good boy! He never whined, never messed... He was so good. We met up with the next person (name now forgotten) in what we call a GUR (Greyhound Run). Along the way, Adrienne Breummer in St. Charles, Missouri, had agreed to house him until he could meet up with the next transporter on his way. Jet made such an impression on Adrienne, she dropped us a line asking to have him if the new home didn't work out for any reason. Uhm... OK... but I don't think he'll be going anywhere... even so, I saved Adrienne's email.

The transporters kept in touch with us all along the way, giving us updates and telling us how good he was. Finally, Jet, his medical record, and his medications for the UTI were handed off to his new owners and then she handed him & his medications over to his new owners.

Jet at Adrienne's Home

A couple of weeks later, we got a phone call from the new owners. It seems that Jet was having problems with urinary leaking. They had taken him to their vet and he told them that Jet's urinary tract and bladder were not properly formed. What? I asked my vet, who had neutered him, if there were any problems with his urinary tract and she told me everything was normal. The new vet wanted to do some kind of surgery that was the equivalent of a urostomy! After discussions with the new owners, it was decided that Jet would come home.

On the return trip, Jet again had the chance to stay with Adrienne. She again asked me if she could keep the boy. We discussed it and I told her that I could not saddle her with a defective dog, one that would probably leak urine uncontrollably for the rest of his life. We went round & round with Adrienne getting a concession out of me... I'd let the boy stay there on a trial basis.
Lindsay is the one who started us onto the path of Greyhound ownership. She was our First... She was the original Dyno-Mutt.... She was and still is our inspiration.

Lindsay was a retired racing greyhound that we adopted from Recycled Racers
in Denver, Colorado. She was a brindle and the color of buttermilk with
burnt toast stripes. A beauty, she was born on St. Patrick's Day in 1991,
a great-granddaughter of the incredible Downing,
who is in the NGA Hall of Fame. Her sire was the noted race dog, Killer

and Colorado Springs. She raced for the Robert Feathers kennel and she
ran, placing consistently in the money, until her retirement in 1995, which is
when we got her.
Lindsay was a dog that needed a job. She wasn't happy as a retiree and
she'd beat up on the other dogs. So, we gave her a job, lure

lure coursing. And, in short order, she achieved her field championships
in both American Kennel Club (AKC) & American Sighthound Field Asso. (ASFA) events. One of the funniest things I ever saw that involved Lindsay was when the judge decided to sit directly behind her at the start of her first
Junior Courser (JC) run. I no longer remember his name.

The judge decided to judge the JC runs by plopping a lawn chair directly behind the dogs at the start. When Lindsay came to the line, several people advised him, including me, that he really didn't
want to sit there behind a greyhound. But, he told us in no uncertain terms, "I know what I'm
doing." OK....

When the hunt-master cried "Tally Ho!", as the slip lead fell away from her neck, Lindsay dug in with those
powerful hind legs and sprinted off the line. With that very powerful first thrust of the hind legs, she dug in and kicked
up a rooster tail of rocks, dirt, cactus.... all of which flew back into
the judge's face. All I could hear at the line were thuds followed by, "Ow!
Ouch! Damn!" I still laugh and smirk. Somehow, I think the judge learned
something new that day - never sit behind a greyhound at the start.

Lindsay loved to run. She loved to compete. We took her to a lure course held in Phoenix at the Estrella Mountain Park by the Desert Fun Bunch. The day was December 7th.... Pearl Harbor Day.

Lindsay won the Open Stakes and got to run for Best of Breed with a large, brindle dog named Cabo. In the Best of Breed runoff against Cabo, Lindsay broke a
metatarsal bone in her hind leg. She never stopped running. She
hiked her leg up and finished the run, winning BOB. We didn't even realize
that there was a problem. That night, she ate her dinner, we walked her
and she never gimped. At least, not until the next morning, which is when she
developed a bit of a hitch in her git-along. We pulled her from the
competition and drove home to Albuquerque. Two days later, she had surgery
to fix the break. The vet said she had to be kept quiet for at least 6 weeks, to allow the bone to properly knit. So, even tho' it wasn't allowed, I snuck her into my office
at work for the next 4 weeks and she slept the day under my desk. My
co-workers absolutely loved her and she got a bit pudgy
while working there.
After Pop died in 1999, my mom came to live with Rob & I. On the saddest weekend in my life, November
6-8, 2003, we lost Lindsay the evening of Nov 6 and my mom the night of Nov 7. We like to think that Lindsay died before
mom so she could show her the way to heaven. Mom died late the night of
Nov 7th. On Nov 8th, there was a local
lure course and I went, not to run dogs, but to be among friends in my time of
sorrow. I needed to be around people and their dogs. I needed to be
among the living. It had been a rough, preceding 10 days during my mom's
short, but deadly, illness. During the lunch break, I looked up and I swear I saw Lindsay
running around the far corner and down the backstretch. As she stretched
out, she disappeared from view. I think she was telling me that
she's OK and that she helped mom across the Rainbow Bridge.

In truth, a year or two later, Lindsay came to me in a dream. In it,
she was running in front of a big, black dog. Soon, as they went around
the near turn, the two of them ran across a bridge and disappeared into the
mists. The name "Cal" was stuck in my mind and the next day, I
called an acquaintance of mine in Tulsa. I asked her, "Teddi...
do you know a big, black dog named "Cal"? If so, I think he just
died." Teddi lost it and broke down in tears. Little did I know
that a short time prior to this, she had adopted a retired stud dogs, Iruska
Excalibur, a big black dog that she called "Cal". He had
died the day of my dream. I told her of the dream and she was
comforted.

Lindsay had found herself a job even after crossing over. Her job is
to escort people and
dogs across the Rainbow Bridge, into heaven's fields. That's our Party
Girl.

Laurel asked Rob & I if we would get Feather "into condition" for the upcoming lure coursing season. Sure... why not... So she came here to live with us for a bit of time... a month or two or three, as needed. Then, back to Laurel's home. Some people from Texas came to visit Laurel after the Valencia Valley shows in October and they saw Feather. She was so lovely that day... Laurel offered to sell her to them. The man was smitten, but his wife wasn't. They offered Laurel some ridiculously low sum of money. I mumbled something to the effect that it was a ridiculous offer, which Laurel heard. She refused and so, back out to the Dyno-Mutt homestead to live with us for the coursing season. One day, after coming out here to the eastern side of the Sandia mountains to visit Feather, Laurel decided that she was much happier with us and she put us on her papers. Feather never left.
Oh Feather could run. She was fast and agile, but silly. We tried running her on the training track at Abilene Greyhound Park one year. She ran about 50' and then laid down on the wet sand. That was bad enough, but then, she started rolling in it. Oh my....

Feather may not have run on the track, but she was a good coursing bitch. She never quite finished her AKC field championship, but she did finish one in ASFA, which many people consider the tougher of the two. She ran in two International Invitationals and a Region 3 Regional. She would also run rabbits and, given the opportunity, she'd try and take a squirrel out in a heartbeat. In fact, while she was waiting to be bred, in 2002, she stayed with friends in Michigan. They had a large maple tree in their back yard and a squirrel would come down to the lowest branches and taunt the hounds. One day, Feather positioned herself under that branch, judged the distance between her & the squirrel and launched herself straight up! She got tail feathers and the squirrel ran up the tree, and never again ventured that close to the ground. Feather, however, was absolutely DISGUSTED that she missed. That's OK... her daughter, Jib, and her granddaughter, Chispa, are carrying on the tradition of trying to get squirrels in trees.
In March 2002, Feather was bred to DC Can Ch Lakilanni Scatpak Barracuda (Cuda) and produced six healthy strong puppies - our Sailing Litter. This breeding was in the planning stages for three years and it combined two super performance lines of show greyhounds. The pups were whelped on May 26, 2002 and they became the Sailing Litter: Javelin, Jib, Dash, Bugsy, Jetty, and Slate. They fulfilled all of our wildest dreams, winning in the breed ring and on the field. Jib & Dash had group placements; Bugsy went Winners Dog at the Greyhound Club of America's National Specialty and also at Morris & Essex to finish his championship. Jib & Javelin were dual champions. ALL OF THEM were outstanding companions.

Feather was a great mom and our foundation bitch. I see her in her children and grand children. Our Feather girl is still with us today.
Nick loved to run in the backyard with the other dogs, so we decided to let him try lure coursing, hoping that whatever plagued him on the track had resolved itself. After examining him, our vet could find no reason not to try him. So, we did. However, the one time we let him run, he again pulled up lame in the left shoulder. So, he never got to play the game again.

To talk about Mimbar is to talk about how A Place for Us Greyhounds (APFUGA) came into being. Mimbar was one of 8 little, 6 wk old reasons, that was the start of APFUGA. Mimbar was one of the Boot Hill Brindles, those were the pups that got us started doing greyhound adoptions & rescue, that were the push to start APFUGA.

Mimbar - He was named after a fictional, alien race of people
from the TV series, Babylon 5, the Mimbari. The Mimbari were also known as
"Boneheads" because of a prominent feature of their skulls, a bony
ridge. Well, Mimbar was our "bonehead."

Mim
was a really cool hound that loved to agitate & torment the
"girls." He would walk up to them and "boink" them in
the side with his nose in an effort to get them to play. Usually, they
turned around and chased him with all their teeth. I'm not sure how many
times Mim needed stitches from his tormenting. Mim loved to play.
Mim was especially fond of children. One year, our
adoption group participated in the Children's Parade held in Santa Fe.
There were thousands of children in attendance along the parade route. We
arrived at the staging area and had to wait. Mim hated waiting and he was
dreadfully bored. He'd already been nipped by one of the girl hounds for
being a PITA and I really didn't want him nipped again so we stood off to the
side, away from them. Anyway, after a bit, we took our spot and stepped
out onto the street. Mimbar stopped dead in his tracks. He looked
around and everywhere he looked, he saw kids. He slowly turned his head
upwards and looked at me as if to say, "So many kids.... so little
time." He promptly drug me over to the nearest batch of kids and just
stood there, leaning into them, basking in their love, hugs and
kisses. Our group was getting far ahead and we had to go...

He leaned into the kids even more. Finally,
as our group was getting ready to go around the corner onto another
street. I lifted this big boy up into my arms and started running down the
street to catch them. Gosh he was a heavy 70 lbs! I set him down and
he again drug me over to the nearest group of kids. LOL... I sure
did get my exercise that day...
Mim was a very fast greyhound. He was probably our
fastest dog. Because of his speed, we were selective in which lure
coursing events he attended. Those with a lot of turns, zigs & zags
were not very good for him. The boy could not turn.

At a GCA Specialty lure course held in CA at a local school that had ballfields. When it was his turn to run. I had Rob slip him as I was chatting with Penny Bolt. Mim was off like a shot at the start, which had a fairly long run up, ending in a left turn. I said to Penny, "Watch... He'll be at the bleachers on the next field over before he even begins to turn."

Sure enough the turn came and went and Mimbar was still going straight. He was slowing, gradually, trying to get to 'turning speed'. And, just before the bleachers, he attained 'turning speed' and started playing catch up with the other dogs. He caught up before the end... but it was in a straight line.
Another time he showed his lack of turning ability was on the Abilene Greyhound Park track, in either 1998 or 1999. We were there for a greyhound get together and had the opportunity to run the dogs on the track. I stuffed him into the 5/16's starting box, a brand new experience for him, and as the lure zipped by... he was off and immediately dropping down to the inside rail. At the first turn, he drifted all the way out to the outer rail and at the top of the backstretch, he dropped back down to the inside. Next turn.... All the way to the outer rail.... At the top of the homestretch, back to the inside....

This dog had incredible acceleration and blistering speed. As he crossed the finish line, the timer stopped and read.... 30.33. The only dog to better his speed that year was a Greymeadows dog, don't remember which one. There was a man there wearing a Kiowa kennels cap. As I gathered up Mimbar, he came over and emphatically said, "Who is this dog??? What's his name??? You've GOT TO GET HIM INTO TRAINING NOW!" He was most disappointed when I told him he was not registered.

Mimbar bounced out of two homes, prior to coming here. We told him he'd never have to worry about losing his home again and we kept him the last
bounce as a 6 month old greyhound puppy.
How we acquired Feather is a story in itself. Laurel Drew, her breeder, sent her to our home to be conditioned for the
upcoming lure coursing season. When she came to us, she was soft & in "show weight". "Show weight" is not conducive to outstanding coursing and it needed to be converted to hard muscle. We got her into shape and planned to make her coming out party the ASFA Region 3 up in Colorado Springs.

Feather had never been on a road trip with us. She was used to travelling, but she always went with Laurel. On the drive up to the Springs, we stopped at the Ft. Union rest area to potty the dogs. We had 2 of ours, Lindsay & Jato, and Feather. Lindsay voided... Jato voided... Feather didn't. Well, maybe she doesn't have to go. Back into the pickup truck and back onto the road. Next stop... the Springs!

We get there and met up with Lisa Thompson and her Irish Wolfhound, MacGregor. We were staying at the same hotel. As we were walking all the dogs, we found a lovely little cafe with sidewalk seating. They were enthralled by the dogs, especially MacGregor, and invited us to bring the dogs back for dinner at a sidewalk table. It was a date!

During our walk, Feather still hadn't gone. Hmmm... No cause for panic - yet. She just doesn't have to go...

We met up and ate dinner and, again, took the dogs for a long walk in the area. Feather still had not produced. Maybe she has a special word? We're walking her... "C'mon Feather... go pee! Feather... take a dump.... Feather, go ka ka... Feather...." I'm sure you get the picture. By now, it's going on 10 pm and it's time for a call to Laurel.

One ringy dingy... Two ringy dingies...

A sleepy Laurel answers, "Hello"?

"Hey Laurel? How do you get Feather to go to the bathroom? We've been walking her & walking her & walking her. We've said, "go pee... go ka ka... go poo" and NOTHING!"

Laurel laughed and said, "Tell her to 'Hurry up!'".

Back outside and at the first dogwalk area... "Feather! HURRY UP!" She immediately squatted and had this total look of relief on her face. Then, she looked at us as if to say, "What took you so long????"

Argh...... That was our Feather. She was so blonde that she was white.

At the lure course, Feather had a most successful coming out party. She ran away with a placement and points towards her ASFA field championship. It was a joyous ride home.

Ch DM Dots N' Dashes

Dash aka Ch DM Dots N' Dashes has been away from home for a couple of
years now and we miss him terribly. He's been living with a family in Amarillo and he was being
shown by their youngest son, who has done a wonderful job with him. They
were an excellent team and the young man showed Dash to the #4 Greyhound in the
country in 2007! Not too bad when you consider that Dash was the dog
that no one wanted, when he was offered for sale.

Dash - Aged 4 wks

As a puppy, Dash was very handsome and he had outstanding
movement. The problem was that he had broken his tail and, with the bones
sticking out, it had to be shortened. Because of that, no one wanted him
for a show dog. They all thought that he'd never finish his championship.

Well, when a show home wasn't forthcoming, we thought of placing
him in a pet home. However, before that could happen, I entered him
(just for giggles) in the Rio Grande Kennel Club shows held over Mother's Day
weekend in Albuquerque. Imagine my surprise when he went Winners Dog on
the first day and Winners Dog, Best of Winners on the second! Short tail
or not, he took the points both days! I was totally gobsmacked!

Little
did I know that that was just the start. Since then, Dash has had many
wins and many, many group placements. Dash's junior handler, Tyler, has shown
him to
all of his group placements. The boys started their winning streak in
Garden City, Kansas when judge Lester Mapes awarded them a Group 4. Up
until this past spring, the boys were on a roll and they were quite the team.
Tyler took Dash to two of the Eukanuba National Championship shows and Tyler
also presented him on the green carpet in Madison Square Garden at the
Westminster Kennel Club show. It's been one heck of a ride for the
boys. But, Tyler has grown and
branched out into showing other breeds. Since he's showing other breeds, it is time for
Dash to come home. We hope to have him back here with us soon.

Sadly, the Hocketts refused to return Dash. More on that situation below...

We miss our Dash and I'm sorry I ever let him go. This is truly one of the great regrets I have.

UPDATE

Dash was the object of a lawsuit when Alberta "C.C." Hockett, also known as, Alberta "C.C." Evans, breached the contract with me regarding Dash. Upon the breach, I immediately requested
she return Dash and she refused. Lawsuit was filed and the judge ruled in my
favor. However, rather than returning our dog to us, he allowed her son, Tyler, to
keep him. To compensate me form losses, the judge awarded me $11,000 + attorney fees + interest at 5%. In addition, she is under a court order to put me back on the dog's papers as co-owner. At this point in
time, nearly 3 years later, Alberta "C.C." Hockett / Evans has ignored the court's judgment, which came down in February
2010.

Not long after the judgment was delivered, August 2010, an email was received from Ms. Hockett / Evans stating that Dash was seriously ill and dying.

I requested that they take him to a vet at my expense, since I was legally his co-owner, I begged her to not let him suffer. She refused and rather than doing right by the dog, she took offense at my request.

Over the past 3 years, several letters have been sent to her, demanding payment in some manner, including offering an installment plan. All have been ignored and returned unopened by the USPS.

At this time, Alberta "C.C." Hockett or Evans owes me well in excess of $13,000. I've been unable to collect anything on the debt due to the "Homestead" laws in Texas. I've not given up and refuse to do so. I've contacted the various credit bureaus and they will not ding her credit report because I'm not a corporation. Collection agencies do not want to touch this because she's in Texas. So, I'm telling everyone out there.... BEWARE!

Yeah... yeah.... I know.... ALL greyhounds are "running dogs". True, but few approach it with as much gusto and intensity as Banner. Banner truly loves and lives to run. He loves to compete and he really dislikes it when he doesn't win. Yes, I think this boy knows when he doesn't win.

Back in November 2010, the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) Greyhound Specialty lure course was being held in Tyler, Texas. It was to be a weekend of lure coursing and a Greyhound LGRA (Large Gazehound Racing Asso.) Specialty.

Up until 2010, the event had always been held on the East Coast, usually in Georgia. Since the event was so close, relatively speaking, we just had to go. It was also a good time to check out the dogs as potential mates for Glory. So, off to Texas Banner & Glory went. I only hoped that Banner would uphold the family honor as Glory was not entered due to a chronic toe injury.

It was time for a road trip.

Laurel Drew & I loaded up the Toyota 4Runner with the dogs, our stuff, coursing stuff, and other stuff and hit the road. I had contacted Buddy Scitern at C&C Greyhound Farm to see if he'd allow Banner to take a lap around his training track. It was a desire to see how well the boy could run. We worked our way down towards Buddy's and found ourselves there on Friday, the day before the Specialty.

Immaculate kennels... Such a clean floor!
(courtesy of C&C Greyhound Farm)

Buddy has a lovely place. The kennels & runs are immaculate... The dogs are happy & well fed... The track is impeccable... His is a top notch, well run organization. Buddy & his family are top notch dog people.

There were a few hounds to run before Banner was to get his turn but the first time he saw the lure zip by on the track, he knew what this was about. He impatiently waited for his turn. Since we did not have a dog to test the boy with, Buddy had one dog left to run and he graciously allowed Banner to load up next to him, a Grade A Gulf dog, to do the 3/16's of a mile.

I was so thankful that Banner knew how to load in the box, thanks to NOTRA racing. Buddy's wife (I think it was his wife) took the boy by the collar to walk him to the box and she was almost pulled off her feet by the lad. He was eager, especially after being on the road for a couple of days. She loaded him up and then loaded the Gulf dog, Stomper, and, quick as a flash, the traps were sprung!

Banner never passed Stomp, but he wasn't distanced either. He held his own and finished lapped onto the dog's hip. The time was under 17 secs. Coming off the track, he had dirt on his face (a first), but the boy was content and it served as a good warm-up for the weekend. It cleared the kinks, mental & physical, out. Putting an edge on him for the upcoming Specialty.

Leaving Buddy's, we stopped at the free, Dog Collectibles Museum in Waco, TX, spent more money, and then proceeded to Tyler, TX to check into our hotel and then to scope out the Texas Rose Horse Park - the location of the Specialty.

Bugsy, Age 6 - 7 months

Bugsy got his call name because, when he would lay down, the white on his chest would make the silhouette of a long-eared jackrabbit - just like Bugs Bunny! His registered name comes from the Rod Stewart song, Sailing.

You see, one of my favorite movie scenes is in the movie, The Perfect Storm. The fishermen are in a bar, the night before they go out for swordfish. It's night and one of the deckhands, "Bugsy", is trying to pick up a woman. In the background, the Rod Stewart song, Sailing, is playing...

"The rhythm of my heart is beating like a drum and the words 'I love you' rolling off my tongue. Never will I go, for I found my perfect home. Where the Ocean Meets the Sky, I'll be sailing."

Having been a boat bum for many years, that scene brings back fond memories and a few tears.

Bugsy's family, the Proctors in New Jersey, have two sons, Patrick and Jared. Bugsy has claimed them and calls them his own.

BOB at Delaware County, Judge: J Council Parker

The Proctors call him 'the little black dog.' He really isn't all that small, standing a good 30" tall at the shoulder, but in comparison with some of the other AKC greyhounds back there, he's on the small side. That's frightening!

Bugsy finished his breed ring championship with style. He was entered for three days of showing at some very tough events: Greyhound Club of America's (GCA) Eastern Specialty, Morris & Essex, and Devon. Yikes! These are shows that brig out the "big guns"... the big handlers & the big time breeders... Some of the dogs in attendance were bred by long time greyhound fanciers, not all of whom agreed with or approved of my judicious use of racing blood in the pedigrees. Breeders such as Rosemary Connor (Amwell Ridge), Sue LeMieux (Gaia), etc. In fact, Ms. Connor (RIP) and Ms. LeMieux (RIP) were behind the most recent attempt to close the AKC studbook to dogs registered with the National Greyhound Association, the domestic registry for racing greyhounds.

Anyway, there was a last minute judge change. Last minute in that due to weather conditions, the scheduled judge was not in attendance. However, in attendance was Lena Tamboer, a borzoi breeder & AKC hound judge. The competition was intense with entries from Cebar (Ellie Creech & Dani Edgerton), Chesagrey (Kat Whitaker), Classic (Cackie Vroom), Eden (Sally Taylor), Golightly (Stacy Pober), Grand Cru (Melanie Steele), Harmony (Cyndi Swanson), Willomoor (June Matarazzo & Patti Clark), and Windrock (Kim & Colin Fritzler). And that's not all of them!

At the end of the day, Judge Tamboer awarded Bugsy Winners Dog for a 5 point major! That was on 5 Oct 2005.

2005 GCA Eastern Specialty - Winners Dog - DM Ocean Meets T'Sky

Needless to say, Betsey Proctor was on Cloud 9, as was I. A Greyhound Specialty winner in my first litter and the 2nd to take an award at a GCA Specialty! Earlier in the year, in March, at the GCA Southern Specialty held in Fort Worth, TX, Bugsy's littermate, Jib, was awarded First Award of Merit by noted breeder judge and open field competitor, George S. Bell.

However, that wasn't the end of the weekend as he still had to exhibit at Morris & Essex and then Devon on the last day. Two very tough shows... The judge at Morris & Essex was Gayle Bontecou, a Scottish Deerhound breeder (Gayleward) & sighthound judge. The entries were pretty much the same as at the GCA specialty. At the end of the judging, Ms. Bontecou awarded Bugsy, Winner Dog, for a 4 point major! He finished! The boy finished his championship and he did it at two of the biggest shows on the East coast against all comers! Wahoo!!!! (Can you tell I'm excited & proud of him?) What a way to finish a breed championship!

Bugsy was retired from the breed ring not too long thereafter and he lived out the rest of his days with the Proctor family. Sadly, he developed renal disease and died in 2009. We do not know what contributed to the kidney disease, but suspect it was a consequence of some medication contraindicated for the use in which it was given.

All of us miss our Bugsy.
Now, instead of always hearing "JIBLET!" ringing through the
house, you are more likely to hear, "BANNER!" We laugh as it
seems that it is always
Banner. He's my heathen child, but what a talented child he is.
Banner is exceedingly smart and he's very keen when it comes to running. The boy does not like any other dog to get ahead of him.

Banner was the first puppy born and weighed 1 lb 6 oz. That is huge for
a greyhound newborn! When he was whelped, he hurt Abbey and she turned around to
bite whatever it was that was hurting her. Laurel & I both blocked her
from the puppy and, after he was out, she was fine and started cleaning &
polishing him. After Banner, the rest of the pups were whelped fairly
easily, except for Nampa. Abbey delivered him standing up. We had to
catch him as he was born.

Banner has a lot of his sire's mannerisms. He'll grab your hand
and lead you somewhere. He's a funny, funny dog. Just last
night, I was watching him with his brother, Nampa. Nampa was nitting
Banner's ears and Banner squealed. When he squealed, Rob hollered at Nampa
to "knock it off." Nampa stopped and was just standing there
when Banner, started chomping on Nampa's feet. However, Rob didn't see the
foot chomping and when Nampa retaliated, Banner again squealed, and Nampa again
was chastised. LOL.... Banner just lay there on the floor, quietly
thumping his tail with a big ol' greyhound grin on his face. The brat!

Banner
is a musician... He's a Gene Krupa wannabe. During the summer, we
have small, plastic kiddie pools for the dogs out in the backyard. The
hounds like to lay in them during hot weather. Well, the wind this past
autumn blew one of the pools upsidedown and we never turned it back over.
The other day, I hear this drumming outside. I look out the kitchen window
and I saw Banner by the pool. He was looking at it and his tail was slowly
wagging. Hmmm.....

Next thing he did, while still looking at the pool,
was lean back on his haunches. He lifted his front feet off the ground,
supporting himself with his back and haunches and started slapping the pool,
drumming it, with his front feet! He couldn't support himself this way for
long and as he put his front feet back on the ground, he got this big ol' goofy
grin on his face and the tail was wagging again. After a minute or so, he
did it again. LOL.... The boy is a musician!

Banner is pointed in both the breed ring and in the lure coursing
field. His win in the breed ring came at the Coronado Kennel Club shows
under noted saluki breeder judge, Sharon Bartosh Kinney. He garnered
2 points in that win with Rob showing him.

Banner, NOTRA Winner

The boy really shines in the coursing fields. On 19 Oct 2008, Banner went Best of Breed at the Albuquerque Whippet Fanciers
Asso. October AKC lure coursing trial for a 5 point major win. The judges were Barb Ewing and Joel
Brady. The next weekend, Banner competed in his first NOTRA racing
event. Banner was awarded 1st place in greyhounds, a JOR leg, a SOR leg,
ORC points. Not too bad for a first time
entry.

The following weekend, he competed in his first ASFA lure coursing
event. On Saturday, he finished first in Open to win 24 points and a
placement towards his FCh. We decided to flip a coin for the breed win
with the owner of the #1 ASFA greyhound, Tally. Renata won the toss and
Tally went Best of Breed. However, the points that Banner won by winning
the Open stakes earned him a start in the next day's ASFA Region 3 Regional lure
course. On Sunday, Banner again went 1st in Open stakes, allowing him to
run for Best of Breed against, Tally, the winner of the Field Champion
stakes. Tally & Banner ran in the breed stakes run off. The
judges tied them. Oh geeez..... We came to the line again, and at
the "Tally Ho!" both hounds were slipped. This time, Banner
emerged victorious and won his first ASFA Best of Breed.

Now then, we wondered, does he have enough left after 4 runs to compete in
Best in Field? Is it even remotely possible that our 16 month old
greyhound could win the Regional, like his momma? We were about to find
out. Banner drew a very hot running borzoi named Nitro (owner: Tom Golcher)
and a good running Rhodesian Ridgeback, Finely. Nitro is fast - greyhound
fast. Finley is a great running Ridgeback. Both are seasoned
competitors. This could be interesting. It definitely would be a
test of Banner's desire & ability.

The hounds are slipped and it soon becomes clear it is a very, very fast run
between Nitro & Banner. The two exchange leads and Banner makes a
diving take attempt on the bag. He misses, rolls and comes up
running. He has a lot of distance to make up on Nitro. He finds
another gear and he's driving.... driving.... He's still behind but
closing, inch by inch. Finally, near the end of the course, he passes
Nitro and picks up the bag in his mouth! He's running with the bag!
Then, the line breaks! The judges call it a course and now, we wait.
The next course on the line is the afghan hound, Summer, and the Pharoah, Xena.
Who will win? The winner was..... BANNER!

Not to let Banner rest on his laurels, most recently I took him
hunting. He shows great promise, especially for being a big dog, at being
pretty good in the hunting field. However, only time will
tell.

Where To Bury A Dog

There are various places within which a dog may be buried. We are thinking now of a setter, whose coat was flame in the sunshine, and who, so far as we are aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought. This setter is buried beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his grave. Beneath a cherry tree, or an apple, or any flowering shrub of the garden, is an excellent place to bury a good dog. Beneath such trees, such shrubs, he slept in the drowsy summer, or gnawed at a flavorous bone, or lifted head to challenge some strange intruder. These are good places, in life or in death. Yet it is a small matter, and it touches sentiment more than anything else.

For if the dog be well remembered, if sometimes he leaps through your dreams actual as in life, eyes kindling, questing, asking, laughing, begging, it matters not at all where that dog sleeps at long and at last. On a hill where the wind is unrebuked and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream he knew in puppyhood, or somewhere in the flatness of a pasture land, where most exhilarating cattle graze. It is all one to the dog, and all one to you, and nothing is gained, and nothing lost -- if memory lives. But there is one best place to bury a dog. One place that is best of all.

If you bury him in this spot, the secret of which you must already have, he will come to you when you call -- come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down the well-remembered path, and to your side again. And though you call a dozen living dogs to heel they should not growl at him, nor resent his coming, for he is yours and he belongs there.

People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent by his footfall, who hear no whimper pitched too fine for mere audition, people who may never really have had a dog. Smile at them then, for you shall know something that is hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing.

The one best place to bury a good dog is in the heart of his master.
DCh DM Jolie NoirGlory is one of the Flag Day Litter and she was the last puppy born on 14 June 2007.
We tried to keep all the names flag related and hers is, sorta... well.... not really.

Because
of her color, black, actual flag names were somewhat limited to those on a Pirate Flag
theme. (I must say that I wanted to call her "Old Glory".)
Anyway, some of the known pirate flags were Jolly Roger.... Not good
because she's definitely not a "Roger". Jolly Rogue -
Nope... no "rogues" in this litter and, besides, who ever heard
of calling a girl a "rogue"? There were red pirate flags as well
as black pirate flags (who knew?) and Betsey, her co-owner, suggested
"Jolie Rouge" because that's what the French called the red pirate
flag... uhm... she's black, not red. And, come to find out,
Jolie Rouge is the root for Jolly Roger. Back there again.... Sheesh!
Talk about frustrating! So, we came up with "Jolie Noire". Ya know, naming puppies shouldn't be this hard!

Glory was never claimed by her co-owner, so she permanently resides here in New Mexico with her two brothers. She regularly beats up on them here at the house. She rules the boys and shows her dam, Abbey, proper respect. Like her Aunties Jib & Javelin, she's another busy body who is always into something!

Best Opposite Photo, Coronado KC

We think Glory is stunning! She is an AKC dual champion. She finished her breed ring title by going Best of Opposite Sex over finished champions! That win took place at the Coronado Kennel Club shows in Rio Rancho, NM under noted judge Dr. Edna K. "Midge" Martin. Dr. Martin gave Glory's sire a major win in Lubbock, TX several years back so I was hoping that she's like her as she resembles Dash. Dr. Martin's comment on handing me the ribbon, "Finally! A bitch with the proper topline." I thanked her and she told me, "Don't thank me. Thank the
bitch." Yes ma'am!

Prior to finishing her lure coursing title, Glory was major pointed in AKC lure coursing and has 8 points, including a 5 point major by going Best of Breed over the field champions. Hmmm... I'm sensing a pattern here. She beats up on her brothers & she beats up on champions? The girl is an Amazon, an Amazon that is very fleet of foot. One of her lure coursing wins was at age 14 months when she finished first in the Open stakes at the GCA Western Specialty lure course in 2008. She tired, however, and did not win breed. If she had, she would have retired the GCA Western's lure coursing trophy as she would have been my 3rd winner as an owner. Our other two winners with legs on that trophy were BJ and Jiblet.
points when she finished 2nd to her littermate, Banner, on Saturday. In
that effort, she qualified for the Region 3 Regional and garnered 18 points
towards her field championship. She has since finished her ASFA FCh title. We also tried oval (NOTRA) racing and she did get a JOR. However, that toe is keeping her from competing further in NOTRA and in any other running events. So sad...

Glory has been open field coursing and she's pointed with AK's. She showed great promise as a hunting bitch but that toe injury has, as of now, effectively ended her running days. At least, until after she finishes her AKC Grand Championship.

In May 2012, Glory was entered one day & one day only in the Rio Grande Cluster. We pulled her out of retirement to show to Dr. Edna K. Martin. Dr. Martin awarded her Best of Breed over other champions of record for a 5 point major towards her Grand Championship. To get a GCh, a dog needs to have 3 major wins (3 points or more) over champions of record and a total of 25 points. Well, since Glory took that major win, we've brought her out of retirement to show. In October 2012, we entered her two of the four days of the Los Lunas cluster. She took two, 3-point majors on the days she was entered. That gives her the required 3 majors and a total of 11 points towards that GCh. Not too shabby... Three majors in Three Days under Three judges.... The hard work is done, now she only needs to point out.
Slate was owned by and lived with Kathy & Wayne Johnson in Michigan. Kathy is also known by her business, Feathered Gems Jewelry.

When Kathy found out that I was breeding Feather, she really wanted one of the puppies. You see, Kathy owned his granddam, Snow (Ch El-Aur Fair Deal FCh) and his cousin, Allegra (El-Aur Dragon Magic JC). You can definitely see the family resemblance.

Slate's registered name was DM Snow's Legacy On The Wind, which was a compromise between Kathy & I. In sticking with the sailing theme, I wanted to call him "On the Wind". Kathy wanted to call him, "Snow's Legacy". As it is, combining the two worked out quite nicely giving him a beautiful and melodic registered name, which also gave credit to his granny, Snow. And (we later figured this out), if the letters of his call name are rearranged, they spell "Tesla", which was the name of the Johnson's very first greyhound, Greys Gold Rush.

Feather's Litter - Slate on top in the middle

The pups were whelped at the home of Laurel Drew, they lived there for the first 5 weeks of their lives. I am ever so thankful that they were whelped at Laurel's home because she helped me through the experience of the difficult birth and the c-section and then, when it was discovered that Feather had very little milk, bottle feeding the entire litter of pups!

Slate was a strapping 16 oz puppy when he was born, but he had a very poor suckle. We don't know why as he was a lovely & well developed baby. There were a couple of times I thought we were going to lose him because he lost weight & became dehydrated. That was when we started bottle feeding. Even on the bottle, the boy had a poor suckle. We wound up tube feeding him. Eventually, he got stronger and a couple of weeks later, the entire litter was eating a slurry of meat, baby rice cereal, and goats milk, which was supplemented by the bottle. He ate quite well and was fine after transitioning to the food. Who knows...

When Slate was a puppy, I convinced a reluctant Kathy to try dog shows. "Just try it..." I'd cajole her. Kathy is probably a lot smarter than me as she really doesn't care for the dog show routine. She's definitely saving herself some money that way! Anyway, She did attend two specialty shows with the boy, one in TX and one in Upstate NY. In Texas, the boy won his class and somewhere there is a picture of this lovely blue dog with a medallion & blue ribbon. He & Kathy stopped showing when he developed an overbite. In the words of Marty Bradford, "He should finish, but I wouldn't breed him." We don't know from where the bite problem came.
Slate was very smart. He had favored toys and he learned to ring bells to go outside. He would wait at the door until given permission to come inside. One of his favorite things was a gumball treat dispenser that Kathy filled with Cheerios. She had to take it away because he was getting fat!
According to Kathy, Slate was never really friendly with other dogs. He wasn't nasty, just didn't want to associate with them. But, at home, he was never anything but sweet. When she brought home the 13 weeks old puppy, Jack (UKC Ch DM Union Jack FCh) he was very good with the rambunctious puppy. She said he was much the way with Jack, teaching him the rules of the house, they way cousin Allegra taught him.
Slate has his own webpage, with many of the photos that Kathy took during his life with her. Sadly, Slate was diagnosed in Nov 2009 with chronic renal failure. That disease combined with a bad back injury cost him and in late July 2010, he joined his Grandma Snow, Momma Feather, and cousins Allegra & BJ at the Rainbow Bridge.
Slate was one of the Sailing Litter born by emergency c-section on May 26, 2002. Kathy has a larger website with lots of pictures of his entire litter from birth to 10 weeks of age.
You can view it at Feather and 'Cuda's Puppies and you can see the litter's pedigree at Greyhound-Data.
